Just thinking out loud here. i just saw a picture on the darkside of a guy on the UK section that posted. Its of his 360 doing 195mph in Germany. Now i am not for one moment questioning the speedo reading becourse i have done it my self in a 360 a few times as well as the F430. no my problem is the picture quality. You see i have always tried to take the perfect speedo picture, or i have had some one next to me trying. In fact have you tried? If you have you will know that it must be almost imposable to get a razor shart no vibration picture, especialy if the driver trys to take the picture let along a pasenger:thumbsdow
well on this dudes picture it only shows the speedo and rev counter and no other gauges, and the picture is crystal clear, so clear infact that even the dash stiching is perfect in clarity. bellow are a few that i took of the im-famus testarossa with the broken rev counter, and no were near the claimed 195mph. They are no were near the perfect vibration free picture of the new picture that has croped up ( Kirk Verdi may be?? ) I or a pasenger have tried to take the perfect 190mph speedo reading but have failed as yet. Even the little corections of the wheel would cause a slight blur let alone the vibration from the road its self.
Has any one done the perfect 190+ picture on here, as perfect in clarity and non-vibration as the one as described? What say you dudes and dudets?

It's all down to one thing - shutter speed.

Your run-of-the-mill compact camera has a very small lens. This means that you can't get much light in. Thus to get a correct exposure you need a long shutter speed to give enough time for the enough light to enter the camera.

With a 'fast' lens (one which lets in a lot of light) you can use a fast (i.e. very short) shutter speed and a wide aperture. This means that any camera vibration is reduced to a minimum because the amount the camera moves is very small given the amount of time the shutter is open. Assuming there is plenty of light in the car then you can use a fast lens and still get good exposure. One of the side effects of using a wide aperture is that the depth of field is reduced (this is the amount of the picture that is in focus front to back). You can see on the image posted that the depth of field is only a few inches (top of the dash is out of focus) which backs up the fact that a wide aperture and short shutter speed was used.

Also, if you bear in mind this was probably a larger picture that has been resized, any blur that might be visible will have been made proportionally smaller.

I think it is possible.

Ric.

Well that explains that, thanks dude. that must be one cool dude to hold that camera steady at nearly 200mph. Anyone that i do it with is screaming like Angelis when we both were only doing 160mph in my spider:laugh:   Bloody wimp.

195mph in a 360 is certainly possible and clear pics is explained by the shutter speed. As hard as I've tried though, I've never managed to get a clear pic at a decent speed - as you can see. Some 'eagle eyed' Ftalkers might spot my aftermarket speedo. I can give you the supplier if you PM Rob Lay....

Goodness - 1post already. I must rest now until 2006 (no smart posts SteveF - I'm here for you :D - and it is actually a very fine site - congrats to whoever did all this, I like it!!!!)

Are you suggesting Kirk Verdi may have taken the picture on FerrariGhostTown.com?

Ric355 is right though...

Ric355... I bought an Epson RD-1 digital rangefinder a few months ago (takes Leica M mount lenses). Ever tried one? www.epsonrd1.co.uk - best camera I ever bought/used

That looks interesting - never seen one before. Best thing I've ever used is a 1Ds Mark II, which I found great but the size and weight takes some getting used to.

howzit sir, glad you could make it.

It would be rude to be anywhere else - feels good to be here for some reason I have to say, I really did take exception to the comments! Anyhow, all is good here, just a little miffed by the weather but looking forward to the next time we can get together.

Hope all is well with you and yours - looking forward to catching up some time soon.

Stig took this pic with a little olympus and is very clear, so it can be done.

The speedo's are far from accurate at these speeds.

I've read a few people who have run with calibrated devices in both the G and 360 and the speedo has been 10-20mph out. The 430 is probably similar.

Whats more interesting is some people have reported the odometers to be less then accurate aswell.

Suprised no one has taken them to court (in the US especially), since miles hit resale and also means your going to be servicing the car more often.
