    From World Car Fans -

Photos of a "green" hybridized Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano have surfaced on the web today ahead of the public debut in Geneva next week.

Our friends at Carscoop are reporting the eletric motor produces approximately 100 PS (74 kW / 99 hp) and 110 lb-ft (149 Nm) of torque. Despite the added weight of 100 kg (220 lbs) from the hybrid components, the power to weight ratio is more than compensated by the horsepower generated by electric motor therefore making the 599 hybrid faster than the standard 599.

Also to be featured in the 599 hybrid concept is a version of the F1 inspired Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS).

As I suspected. A tentative step.

Eventually going electric will yield unbelievable performance advantages on and off the track. Think about it for a moment, once you get a bit more radical than this publicy stunt and remove the engine from driving the wheels directly, instead allowing it to generate power directly into very high power capacitors and storage batteries you start to see very different ways to control that 'power'.

Once all the wheels are individually powered from electric wheel motors you gain 'instant' on torque and fully adjustible power. No 'revs' to speak of, just instant pure torque and also proper 'torque vectoring' where you can apportion the right amount of power for the available grip from the surface your tyres are on. If you reverse the torque the microsecond slip is detected you can easily slow down the wheel to match the maximum speed it can do for the surface keeping it exactly matched to available traction for any surface.

On the weight gain, they could have save the added weight quite easily. Just put in some lightweight carbon seats, fit a titanium exhaust and gel battery. Done.

Where have you been in the past few years?

Electronics... Think your foot is really directly controlling that throttle on any F cars since late 90's? Nope, its a joypad, your foot controls a potentiometer (well 2 actually, 1 is a failsafe), where the electric signal is fed into a computer and only it decides if you get power or not, it if detects slip no matter what the angle of your foot on the pedal the electronics won't allow it!

The F355 pioneered f1 amt, the 360 improved it, the CS sped it up, the 430 Scuderia re-refined it further and added Electronic Differential to the party and the 458 has evolved even further with estimation modelling.

Its a natural evolution of the car just like the passing of the manual gearbox, there will be no gears at all once we get to pure electrical torque acting on electric motors. And once the engine is used a just a power source, its likely to be replaced by a fuel cell. More efficient, more compact and zero emissions.

The Future is all electric... They will absolutely smoke existing cars from a performance perspective but still I shed a few tears to the passing of cars as we know it...

Still we are at least 10-15 years away from all that at best...

Personally, I think this is very limp attempt at a hybrid - and just so old school. Now I know the Porsche boys are to be derided at all times, but frankly, there effort is so much more innovative and convincing. Come on Ferrari - you can do better! Link below
