They all don't do it, mine never ever leaked white dust of any kind into my engine bay when I ran a stock system, its only the ones which are knackered or well on their way out.

This must be quite a few of them by now, it shouldn't be surprising on a car that's a decade plus old.

"which are knackered or well on their way out"

Thanks but what does this really mean. Are you suggesting that the inner silencer is rusting through ? aren't them made of stainless and should last for ever ?

If it's "just" the heat insulator between inner and outer casings then eventually it will all fall out and it will be fine ?

Has anyone actually done an autopsy on these silencers ? with pictures ?

    thanks

Are you sure it's not the cats disintegrating?

Lee it could be the problem of the isulation escaping as described above but had the box been polished by the vendor, if so could be polish dust.
    Hope it's polish dust.

The silencer is not fitted to a car and it's coming from the casing between the inner and outer casings not from inside the silencer.

So far as I know, they will all do it eventually. My car wasn't doing it when I bought it (at 15,000 miles) but it was doing it 1000 miles later. I've just fitted a 2nd hand Capristo Level 1 and the main reason I've done this is because of the white dust problem - I liked the sound of the stock exhaust.

Slightly O/T but I may as well tell you how the Capristo compares while I'm here. It's quite a bit louder than the stock system on tick over so my neighbour probably won't be too pleased when I come home at midnight. The tone of the sound is improved, with a nice howl - even when driving slowly. It's a bit boomier at low revs (not too annoying) & my parcel shelf bin now has an irritating occasional rattle. Cruising down the M-way it's no louder than the stock system - I'm v pleased about this.

My new system weighs 24.85 KG and the stock system weighed 31.75 KG incl the bracket & bolts, so I'm dissapointed I haven't saved more weight. The Capristo 3 I accidentally bought (didn't know what level it was when I agreed to buy it) then swapped for the Level 1 was much lighter.

Thanks Tony, this is good comparison info.

So it seems the dust is an unfortunate problem as it's likely the silencers are not really worn out at all.

That's right - I wouldn't consider the box to be to be worn out unless it becomes more noisy.
