    Default 328 Tinkering

Carried out a little DIY today. Ok not in the F40 LM league but a little tinkering that has made my car a tiny bit nicer.

The number plates were a little tatty and were letting the car down a little so I took short trip to Egam and they made made me up a new set with Maranello at the bottom.

Getting the sticky off the bodywork was, in the end, a 2.5 hour job - grrrrr.

A lot of patience, panel wipe and a steady hand and it all came off.

I know I could have just stuck the new plate on and left the old stickies but I'm a bit OCD like that. I'm a lot happier knowing that the paint is clean underneath.

After a coat of wax and with the new plate on...

Now wish I could find those rubber gaskets that go between rear lights and bodywork. They are a bit shabby and the one thing still letting the rear of the car down. Any ideas welcome. Drawn a blank at Maranello classic parts and Eurospares.

I also bought a new Pininfarina badge for the left rear panel as current one has seen better days. I assumed it would be a stick on job but it has two pins that go through the bodywork and a couple of strange (to me at least) fixing studs.

I'll ask for a little advice on here prior to attempting that job. If anyone has done this before I'd be grateful of any tips. Cheers

Not sure if they're interchangeable but Superformance have various rubber seals for the 208/308 range

    Are they the same size/fitting?

I imagine they're exactly the same. Thanks! I'll give them a bell first thing tomorrow to double check.

    Hi Graham.

Be very careful with a blade removing number plate foam, best to roll your finger over it and then get some tar remover to clean up, Im glad the result came though for you.

Pinin badge is a bit fidely, Pop the car on axle stands, remove the wheel, wheel arch liner and you can get to the back of it between the body section and fuel tank.

Thanks Tim. I was being ultra careful. It took so long though. I'll try the tar remover when I do the front - although not so critical.

Gonna have a crack at this tomorrow. Do the fasteners just push on by hand?

You should be able to - a touch of silicone will help if its awkward, if not you will need a small socket to put even pressure all around when you press it - probably held by mole grips.

Just a little suggestion Graham regarding refitting the badges.

I used some very thin double sided tape on the badge to help secure it to the bodywork. Yes the clips hold the badge in place but the tape holds it firm against the bodywork.

Hit a problem fitting my shiny new pininfarina badge as the fuel tank is so close to the bodywork there's no access.

Not sure how I'll get round this but will hang on to the badge until next engine out. No idea how big a job it is to move the tank but hey, I've learnt a bit more about my car today so all good.

Whilst I was there, I took the opportunity to give it all a thorough de-grease and clean up.

Only downside is I threaded one of the wheel liner bolts by being a bit clumsy so now have one hole with no bolt in it.

Final job if the day was to replace the front number plate with the new maranello one bought yesterday. Took a quick pic whilst the plate was off as I think the car looks so much better without.
