308 dry sump oil in water

Hi, I haven't used my 308 for a few years, I started her up and noticed my water losing coolant and my oil increasing fit which in assuming the waste is nickname with the oil? It's a 1979 dry sump, is there anything other than a blown head gasket that could be the cause? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Paul
 
What does the oil look like? If the water is getting into the oil due to a blown head gasket you'd expect it to go 'milky'. Does the oil still look fine?
 
Oil cooler is air cooled I understand.

Coolant can be lost for various reasons .
Have you seen any on the floor ?
Have you vented the radiator at the front via the valve RHS top ?
Could be a loose hose clamp etc etc or rad leak etc ??

It varies and there’s a knack measuring with a dry sump ,it’s all about the timing when you take the cap off the tank to record the level on the stick .
Should be hot and just after shut down or @ tick over . If any longer Eg 10 mins after shut down the level does vary .= read the manual on exactly how to check it .Be consistent with this .

If left standing there is a bit of condensation that develops @ the top of the tank , under the cap ……is this what you see ?
If so pretty normal , just go out for a long drive .

HG failure will manifest itself in the thing boiling up , so the water ( and to extent oil ) temp increasing see the gauge - and the expansion tank cap ( still talking water now ) opening up and blowing off excess pressure ….you will see coolant steaming from the overflow pipe . Have you seen this ?

Very much sounds like typical recommissions issues from lack of use .
 
As Silver says a bit of milkiness around the top of the oil tank is, I think, pretty normal, I'd be a bit more cautious running the engine too much if the oil in the tank itself is all milky. Before doing that you could do an oil change to see if the new stuff stays clear or goes milky. In fact if it's say for a few years that's probably not a bad call before running her too much anyway.
 
Thank you and it does seem like it was due to a bit of condensation as you say, I've ran it a few times and the oil now seems OK.
 
Great news .
You have to keep using regularly. I know it’s difficult during a U.K. winter .
You next little job / task is to confirm the cooling system is up to spec ?
Check the tank level cold should be around 6 cm from the top filler hole , bleed the fwd rad ( screw top RHS ) while hot and running to release any air .
Maybe consider a full drain / refill of coolant ? Bcz the various mixture of metals used , black , cylinder liners , pipes , pump and impeller + rad . It’s got to work hard , more like the coolant additives to keep all those metals happy in top condition. The additives deteriorate over time .

I use Prestone green , do it every 5 yrs . It’s an easy job but messy .You just remove the cover under the front and pull the lower of the two pipes off and out it pours .

I just returned from an uneventful ( reliability wise ) euro trip in my GT4 ….some 4000 kms around the Alps .
