First Supercar Dilemma!!

Hi all,

I’m fortunate enough to be in a position where I’m finally looking to buy my first supercar. I’m 31 and have a maximum budget of £250k.

My dream cars have always been the 488 Pista or 458 Speciale, and long term I think one of those would still be the ultimate goal. However, I feel the market has moved beyond where I’m comfortable spending at this stage.

I’m considering a 458 Spider, Huracán Performante or 812 Superfast. I’ve driven the Performante and loved it, but haven’t driven the other two yet.

The car will be purely for weekends, occasional European tours and some business networking. I want something that feels really special, sounds incredible and that I’ll be proud to own.

Depreciation/value retention is a strong consideration, as ideally I’d like to enjoy the car for 2–4 years and then use it as a stepping stone towards the Pista or Speciale.

Part of me thinks I could buy the Lamborghini now, enjoy it for a few years and then move into the Ferrari I’ve always wanted. The other part of me thinks I should just buy the Ferrari now, even if it isn’t the Pista/Speciale I ultimately want.

I’m not necessarily limited to those three cars, so I’d really appreciate opinions from anyone who has owned or driven them, particularly what you would choose in my position and why.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Hi Mike and welcome to CS.

It's a nice dilemma to have, and you'll probably be happy no matter which way you go, but personally if Ferraris are really your thing I'd go down the Ferrari route from the off.

If a 458 Speciale is one of your dream cars you may actually find a 458 Spider suits you better anyway. You can't use all the performance any of these cars gives you on a public road so any slight difference in performance is actually pretty irrelevant, and for your expected use you may find a Pista or Speciale will be a bit too 'track focused' where as a Spider would be much nicer for touring etc.

Essentially I'd go for the 458 Spider and see how you get on. Last of the NA V8s should hopefully guard against depreciation a bit and they are fantastic cars.

welcome!

Any of those would be great; do try and drive them as will certainly be different.

458s and anything “special “ have certainly enjoyed a bit of a step increase in price this year; crystal ball gazing if this continues!

not a lot of ferrari stock these days so worth spending time with your local dealer; undoubtedly a lot being sold without being advertised.

good luck, post pictures of what you look at!

Mike, I'd lean towards the Ferrari now, mainly because you said the Ferrari is the one you've always wanted. Buying the Lamborghini first means you'll likely be selling it in a few years to get into the car you actually want, and that's an extra transaction with its own costs and hassle.

The 458 Spider is a good shout too. It keeps the NA V8 and the look you're after, and on public roads you won't feel much difference from a Speciale anyway. It's a much better fit for European tours than a track-focused car.

I'd also agree with A348W about test driving. Drive the Huracán and the 812 back to back if you can, since the 812 is a very different animal to the Ferraris and the Lambo is a completely different character again. The one you keep thinking about after the drive is probably your answer.
