I have a 1979 308 GTS and I am trying to install a new timing belt. The problem I am having is the exhaust cam for the front 5-8 bank wants to slip off the factory mark. When I change the belts I always adjust the valves and replace the cam seals so I take the cams out and do not bother with something like a locking tool.
I oiled the caps and the channel the cam sits in which is probably making it easier for it to slip. I have thought introducing some friction might help such as putting a post-it note under one of the caps and of course removing it once the belt is on.
Eventually, I have always succeeded but I am wondering if there is a trick to help keep the cam on the mark while I install the timing belt?
Thanks!
