Under bonnet insulation mat stains

The black under bonnet mat on my 550 looks shocking with lots of staining.
It feels like a flock has been sprayed onto a base so it cannot be rubbed with a cleaner as the flock simply parts company with the backing.
Any thoughts on a method to clean it up or just help to make it look smarter?

You could try removing it and steam cleaning it but I very much doubt that's going to come clean. If you're not wanting to replace or can't get hold of a replacement I think the only option to make it look better would be to remove and spray paint it.

I've not done enough research to know whether this would be the sort of stuff to use so you'll need to look into it a little more but this stuff might work:

That's certainly a lot worse than mine! I'd also have a go at painting it. That stuff Pete has linked to looks decent, my first thought was the paint would need to cope with a lot of heat

As I say I've not really researched it much, I don't know what the material under your bonnet is made from for example, but the manufacturer's US site for the paint I linked says it can be used for things like firewalls under the bonnet:
