Gary , right here we go I'll try and answer your question without going toooooo technical

Polish - generally abrasive used to remove scratches /imperfections oxidisation etc and create a natural shine on the paint work

Wax - can be abrasive (older type i.e Autoglym ), most modern ones aren't abrasive (zymol swissvax etc) used to protect the paint and add a synthetic shine.

Combine the both to get a perfect finish.

The next thing to look at is budget , how close to perfection do you want to get and how much time do you want to spend if you can be ****d to do it yourself.

    Do it yourself
Budget 10 to 15 - time 1 hour - basic level of shine
Go for Autoglym , its a quick step once over product , is slightly abrasive , so will remove oxidisation etc but only temporarilly fills in the imperfections so lasts at most a couple of weeks.

Budget 15 to 50 - time 6 to 8 hours - medium level of shine
I'd go for the meguiars 3 step system.
    This contains
    1. a slightly abrasive polish
    2. paint cleanse - removes dead/oxidised paint and very basic swirl removal/filling in
    3. final wax

    Budget 100 to 200 - time 12 to 24 hours - very good / semi professional finish
Go for the Swisvax, Zymol , Dodo Juice starter systems
    These contain
    1. clay bar- removes surface contamination
    2. paint cleanse (as above)
    3. carnauba wax - none abrasive wax which will bond to the paint offering a much deeper shine and greater protection than basic hallfords type products.

    Professional finishes

    Budget 250 - 400 - time 1 to 5 hours
    Autoglym life shine / permagaurd / G-technic
These are polymer style sealants which bond to the paintwork giving a synthetic finish , lasts about 12 months .
Pros : very easy to wash over (if thats all you want to do )
    Pretty good finish
Cons : generally dont last as long as manufacturers claim (some claim upto 3 years which is BS)
    Dont cover swirls and imperfections

    Budget 400 to 600 - time 12 to 24 hours - finish perfection
    Full paint correction and protection.
Done by ourselves (site sponsors ) www.sportscarprotection.com
    Full wash and dewax
    Clay bar

Full paint inspection with state of the art measuring equipment , showing the depth of the paint on all panels , highlighting standard manufacturers finish / resprays and areas of low paint that may have been machined in the past.

Full paint correction - generally a 3 stage machine polish removing all swirl marks and light to medium scratches creating a perfect imperfection free , natural deep shine to the paint work.

Paint cleanse / sealant cleans the paint surface and starts the sealant process

Paint protection- to protect the highly polished paint surface we use Zymol Royale , this is a very high grade carnauba wax which bonds to the paint protecting it from all the elements
(see cleaning section for photo's of our work)

    Hope that helps
    Dave Z
