Main dealer hourly rates

Can anyone tell me what current main dealer hourly service rates are. I know they are not all the same but would be interested to have a rough idea.

Depends for what and who!

I understand Carr’s for older cars and long stand customers is circa 80-90. Dicklovett recently charged me 100. I think “normal” rate is circa 140-150.

So for you....!

I think; but don’t know the other issure might/could be parts prices and if they are willing to use non oem stuff and the knock on effect to your bill.

Let us know what you find out.

I was quoted £150+vat at Maranello but that was a few years ago. I don't get the difference in the hourly rate, in the same workshop just because a car is older. Do you only get half the attention?

No: its to tempt older cars away from independent and keep the workshops busy

I suspect very few people in this era of maintenance contracts and/or fixed price servicing etc pay the full rate

I use Dick Lovetts in Swindon and they were charging £90 (from memory ??). They have been happy to fit non OEM manifolds etc.

Never had any nasty surprise for "extras". On my first visit one of the mechanics put the car on the lift and walked me round the car and checked it out for free, showing me all the things that can go wrong with a 430.

I left the dealership feeling like they want to develop long term relationship with me, and my grandsons who have been given toy cars/hats/etc (I have to rotate them as can only fit one in the car at a time  !!) , so wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I think I pay 100 +VAT at DL but have had many "capped" bills i.e not charged for what it really took to complete.

They also quoted me the cheapest belt change than anyone else on the 360 (other MD and Indie) and when they found the belt tensioners needed replacement they did them within the original quoted price.

I've always found them to be excellent and wouldn't hesitate to use them or recommend them.

As a comparison. Mini Charged me £123 ph +VAT for mis-diagnosing an issue on my Cooper D:mad:

So what I pay at DL is a bargain in my opinion.:)

Nope, it's because with the older cars you're not paying for the purchase and renewal of diagnostic equipment, specialist tools or specialist training required on the modern cars. That's the rationale given to me by a main dealer as to why they'd charge me less per hour than for a more modern tipo. In reality it's also because they've pretty much got the work from the more modern cars guaranteed whereas with an older car you have the option of just going to an indie who doesn't have or need all that specialist equipment.

I thought it was Ferrari policy for their dealers to support older cars and help keep them running to boost the marque’s image. Is it only Carr’s who do this?

It might be policy, but no way would I entrust my GT4 to any but a couple of main dealers. They just don't have the expertise. All the of the mechanics who used to work for them back in the day now have their own businesses.

From what I hear I would exclude Lovetts and Carrs from that statement.

No, don’t think it’s only Carr’s, in fact Graypaul now have a ‘division’ dedicated to the older tipos - GrayPaul Classic I think it’s called. But the rationale I gave is what I was told by a service manager, likely to appease/answer questions like Mark’s about why owner of older cars pay less hourly rate for servicing.

I suspect as you said competion from indies is a big driver of price reductions for older models. I got the impression that the policy came from Italy but perhaps it came out of some dealer agreement or maybe they all reached the same conclusion. Next time I talk to Mark from Carr’s I might clarify that just for interest.
He did say they liked to see the older cars there and they certainly seemed to be enthusiastic about getting them right. Apparently they were quiet (although my car was not alone in what I presume is their classic section), but after discounting the labour hours for extra work that came up during the service the hourly rate was very reasonable.
