308 indicaters failed

Although not legally required I took my 308 in for MOT last week but the first use of the indicators showed that they were not working, in either direction. which they were last drive 2 weeks ago.
The garage (not Ferrari specialists but they have done a lot of work on this car over the years) are baffled. They have done the obvious electrical checks and think the fault may lie inside the steering column and may be mechanical not electrical.
Steering wheel removed and a special tool had to be purchased to remove the lock nut on the end of the column to get further. Nut off and nothing moves. Some tapping from below and still all totally solid. My guy not keen on trying any harder in case of damage.
Any thoughts on either:
A. What the fault may be?
B. How to get the steering column apart?

Pending a reply to the hazards query my 308 had something like this and it was the fifth wire to the hazard switch being critical to the winkies or to be precise something related to the switch no longer making contact with that lead - new switch = no problem

Got it sorted. It was an electrical issue in the end to do with the relay so all a bit of a false alarm, but at least an easy fix.
